F-Words in Childhood Disability

The ‘F-words for Child Development’ (Functioning, Family, Fitness, Fun, Friends, Future) provide a family-centred, strengths-based, holistic approach to child health and development.

An article outlining a set of six ideas called the ‘F-words’ that are derived from combining the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Functioning (ICF) and other thought evolutions in the field from CanChild and NetChild. The ‘F-words’ aim to open up possibilities for thought and action that will benefit children parents, families, and professionals. The ‘F-words’ include: Function, Family, Fitness, Fun, Friends, and Future. Each of these elements are embedded in the fabric of what conductive education is and what it aims to do. CE enables students to function (execute tasks in life situations) in society by performing physical fitness and rehabilitation exercises that are both fun and functional to support each child in their unique needs and abilities. At the core of CE is the belief that family involvement is critical to success towards productive independence in the future.
